Waves and Water

Waves are easily produced by a moving effect machine with a moving wave painted on its disc. Sometimes a film of waves is shot and the film is run in a loop instead of using a disc.

A very realistic effect can be achieved using a rotating wave drum which has a long  waving slit engraved in it. The rotating drum is effective in throwing a moving wave pattern onto a backcloth and scenery.

Ripple effects can also be achieved using a moving effects machine but the repetitive nature of the machine makes it too obvious an effect. A simple and effective method of producing water ripples is to shine a powerful beam of light onto a bath of water with pieces of broken mirror and glass in it. When the water is moved, the ripples are reflected by the mirror or glass.
