The dress rehearsal is usually held in front of an audience. The production table will be dismantled and the lighting designer will sit somewhere front of house. The dress rehearsal is the lighting designers last opportunity to make minor alterations and adjustments. Since this rehearsal is treated as a real show, and there can be no interruptions, the lighting designer should not disturb the board operator by remarks on the intercom system, but take down written notes.
The first show, also known as the premiere, marks the end of the lighting designer's work. The lighting has now been realized and is running smoothly. Sometimes, however, the official premiere will be held after a few performances with work on changes and adjustments proceeding in all departments including the lighting. The lighting is now finalized. Making changes and improving the design after the premiere interferes with the work of the lighting crew and will harm the show and the designer's professional reputation.
