The old, yet more common communication protocol in multimedia configurations is SMPTE Time Code (TC).
SMPTE TC was developed, as its name indicates, by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. It evolved as a standard time code for video editing, basically a clock system, which enables frames of a video to be assigned an absolute time and frame number. It was then used for synchronization of video and sound. Once the time code is recorded on both the video and the audio tapes, a synchronizer can make sure both are locked in to the same time. SMPTE is used in multimedia technical systems to coordinate and synchronize different types of equipment. For instance a computerized show
controller
might generate a SMPTE TC signal to a film
projector
and to an audio disc player. This enables the film and the sound to be activated in perfect synchronization. |
