Lighting designers need to communicate their intentions to the lighting crew. For this they use various plans, plots, lists and charts, some of which are prepared before the execution of the lighting begins, while others will be generated later on, recording the work that has been done and changes of the original plans.

Before preparing the plans for execution of the lighting, the lighting designer must finalize the lighting design. The luminaires must be specified, and lighting positions determined for each luminaire. These technical decisions are made with the aid of a floorplan and cross sections, using a specially designed template with standard
beam
angles which helps in selecting luminaires and lighting positions .
The selection of luminaires and lighting positions, can be made easier by using a CAD lighting program, most of which have this feature.
