Pictorialism in Stage Lighting

Pictorialism is a scenographic style used in certain types of musicals and romantic plays, where realism is accentuated or heightened. Pictorialism in lighting is based on the same principles as realistic lighting, i.e. adherence to the principle of motivating lighting, while heightening certain selected elements. Pictorial lighting tends to use saturated color in the construction of stage images, for instance: moonlight will be bluer or candlelight more orange than their realistic counterparts. Scenic elements and backdrops washed by colored light can make the entire stage picture look like a technicolor painting.
