Modern Follow-Spots

The most common type of modern follow-spots has a lens system which is similar to that of profile-spots. Follow spots, however, are usually equipped with extremely powerful discharge lamps.   Special accessories are added to, or integrated into, follow-spots. These may include: an iris which effects changes of the size of the beam as well as straight-edge shutters , a manually operated mechanical color changer, a special stand designed to maintain the stability of the moving follow-spot, and a mechanical dimmer (dowser).

Another type of follow-spot has a parabolic reflector and no lenses., and is usually equipped with a powerful low-voltage lamp . The beam produced from this type of follow-spot is extremely narrow, and only slight variation of beam angle and diffusion can be effected. Low voltage follow-spots are admirably suited to soft-edge follow-spotting from on-stage positions like a portal bridge.
