Mechanized yokes are used in modern theatre in order to
cut
down on the time and manpower needed for
rigging
and focusing the lighting equipment. The number of luminaires hung in theatres is constantly growing, and there is often not enough space on lighting bridges and pipes for the needs of both lighting and the scenery. Focusing the equipment and changing filters after the scenery has been set up is often complicated and time consuming.

Remotely controlled luminaires can be beneficial in solving some of these problems. The same luminaire can be used over and over again for numerous purposes in the course of the show at
preset
focus positions, cutting down the number of luminaires which need to be hung.
In addition, the effect of light beams moving across the
stage
offer new artistic possibilities which can enhance the production.
