Lighting Design Terminology

Lighting designers deal with an ephemeral matter - light. However, the lighting ideas and looks that occur to the designer have to be articulated and noted down to be later transformed into lighting plans and plots.

Each designer has his or her personal style of notations, but when these are transformed into technical plans, they must be drafted and worded in language which is easily understood by all those who take part in the lighting process.

Most lighting designers use a mixed system of verbal and graphic notation to articulate their lighting ideas. The symbols and terms described here are part of an internationally accepted language, just like music notes or dance notations. These notations will be used at different stages of the designer's work for developing the list of lighting elements and the cue synopsis.
