Lighting Design Path

Following is a typical model of the stages of lighting design. This model can vary depending on the type of show, but the process will remain the same in principle.


Pre-production

The aims of this stage are the development of a lighting concept and formation of ideas for lighting the production.
The practical steps which must be taken include:

1. Reading and studying the play
2. The first meeting with the director
3. Working with the director and scenery designer
4. Compilation of technical and organizational data 
5. Determination of schedules

 
Rehearsals

The aim of this stage is development of the lighting plans.
The practical steps which must be taken include:

6. Attending rehearsals
7. Preparation of initial lighting plans
8. Evolution of the lighting elements and analysis of the light changes
9. Selecting the equipment
10. Preparation of detailed lighting plans (plots and lists)
11. Submission of plans for execution of the lighting
 
Technical Rehearsals

The aim of this stage is incorporation of the lighting into the show

12. Rigging the lights
13. Focusing the lights
14. Plotting the show
15. Technical rehearsals with actors, scenery and lighting transitions
16. Runthroughs with scenery changes and costumes
17. Dress rehearsal
18. First evening (premiere)
