Light Sources of Follow-Spots

Most hard-edge follow-spots have sophisticated optical systems and high wattage discharge lamps. The choice of the type of follow-spot and its lamp wattage depends on the required light throw, i.e., the distance from the follow-spot to the stage.     Discharge lamps are particularly suitable for follow-spots due to their high light output, their compactness, and their high color temperature, often as high as 5600OK. This bluish light accentuates the circle of the beam in a way no incandescent light with a color temperature of a mere  3200OK can.

Discharge lamps commonly used in follow-spots are in the range of 575W - 4000W and more.
