Determining the Lighting Style

The style of the lighting is affected by various elements in the show and by their interrelationships: scenery, costumes, period of the play, form of directing, structure of the stage, type of theatre, and location of the show (interior or exterior). The genre (such as: dance, drama, opera, musical, rock concert, comedy or tragedy) must also be taken into consideration, although it does not necessarily dictate a particular stylistic definition. Dance can be classical, modern, post modern and so on. A musical can be comic, but it can also be a tragedy, and the lighting for each will, of course, be totally different.
Working within the stylistic framework of the production, the lighting designer will strive to develop a lighting style that will accommodate the different stylistic aspects of the production, and will contribute to the congruity of the production style.
