Cue Synopsis Terminology

The following terms are used in connection with light changes:

Auto Follow

AF

Immediate transition from one cue to the next.

Balance

 

The relative levels of the lighting elements which comprise a lighting state

Blackout

DBO

Dead blackout. A state in which all lights are turned off.

Build

 Gradual increase of a lighting state.

Chase

Switching rapidly between lights in a looped sequence

Close

video

Transition from a widely lit stage to a concentrated and defined area.

Counts

C

Indicating the length of a change in the lighting, the duration of a lighting cue based on one second units.

Crossfade

XF 

A gradual transition from one lighting state to the next, the first fading out and the next fading in simultaneously

Cue

 

A general theatrical term specifying a change or the indication for such change. A Light Cue (LX cue) indicates a transition of the lighting from one lighting state to another.

Dipless Crossfade

 

Synchronous transition from one lighting state to the next.

Dissolve

 

1) Fading the light on a scrim while building light behind it. Also: Bleed

 

 

2) Crossfading between different projections

Fade Down

 

A gradual decrease of light

Fade In

 

A gradual increase of light

Fade Out

FO

A gradual extinguishing of light

Fade to Black Out

FTBO

A decrease of lighting levels terminating in a blackout.

Fade Up

 

A gradual increase of light

Full Up

FU

The brightest level of a lighting look

Full Up to Finish

FUF

Increasing the lighting level to its brightest, usually over the last bars of a musical number.

Lighting State

 

A composition of lighting which is arrived at after the execution of a light cue

Repeat

 

Moving to a lighting state which has already been used in the show.

Reverse

 

Return to the previous lighting state.

Segue

 

A lighting cue which immediately follows the preceding lighting cue.

Sequence

 

A number of lighting cues which are effected in sequence

Snap/ Cut/ Bump

 

An instantaneous change of lighting

Split Crossfade

Non synchronous transition from one lighting state to the next.

Spread

 

Transition from a concentrated area to a widely lit stage.
