Artificial light is any
light source
other than natural light. Artificial light sources include those with a continuous
spectrum
such as candles and oil lamps, and modern electric incandescent lamps, as well as discontinuous electric light sources such as discharge lamps and fluorescent tubes.
When
electricity
is applied to various materials they heat up and emit light.
Such light sources that produce light due to resistance of the filament to the electric current are called incandescent lamps. Discharge lamps produce light when the elements that they contain, either gases or minerals, are excited by an electric spark.
