Analogue Communication Signals

Prior to the development of the computerized control board and digital dimmers, communication from control board to dimmer was executed through a cable with numerous wires, one for each dimmer. For example if the theatre had 120 dimmers the control cable had to have over 125 wires. Typically, control signals used were about 10V DC.

Cross-talk between control signals could create quite a problem, as the control signal of one dimmer would effect other channels. Because of the large amount of wires, a problem in one of the wires was hard to deal with. Digital communication which easily solves these problems made analogue communication obsolete.
